Our hosts and producers are looking for the best of the best cultural happenings in the region, whether that’s an art walk, an author talk, or recommendations for the summer flicks you should catch in theaters — or wait to stream from the comfort and relative affordability of your home. And we’re having conversations with the people who make Seattle a cultural hub.
The show’s three hosts will each have a different focus related to Seattle’s unique cultural scene.
Jeannie Yandel will cover arts and culture events overall, especially stuff that’s free or inexpensive or doesn’t make your typical critic’s list.
Katie Campbell will cover Seattle’s literary scene, including visiting authors on tour, local writers, and other ways to get lit(erary).
Dyer Oxley will cover pop culture and how it intersects with life in the Puget Sound region.
As you can probably tell, we’re looking at a wide range of cool stuff to leave your house for, and we have a pretty good idea about what to start to look for that interests us. But we also want to heard from you.
What’s your favorite place in the region to meet up with people? (Bonus points if it’s artsy, culturally relevant, or just plain geeky!) Send your response to [email protected].
We asked our KUOW colleagues for their suggestions to give you a little inspiration.
Podcast producer Matt Martin, who’s on the Meet Me Here production team, called out Easy Street Records and Cafe for “brunch, events, or enabling a vinyl addiction.”
Newscaster Paige Browning recommended (our culturally relevant friend) KEXP and their, frankly, dope gathering space over at Seattle Center. If you’re like Matt, you could feed your vinyl addiction, or if you’re like most of the rest of the KUOW newsroom, you could feed your coffee addiction, because Caffe Vita is also in the house at KEXP. Plus, you might just run into someone from the local music scene while you’re there.
Amanda Winterhalter, an institutional giving officer at KUOW, should count as a recommendation herself since she’s deep in the local music scene. That said, don’t sleep on her recommendations, which included these live music venues:Conor Byrne Pub, The Rabbit Box, and The Royal Room. Amanda also shouted out the “newly-discovered Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) that’s just a five-minute walk off the ferry!”
Or maybe you want to get cultured outside?
Many of our colleagues recommended their favorite parks, but project manager Hilary Lee made a strong case for her pick: Volunteer Park.
“It has lots to do that is pretty cheap or free: the Asian Art Museum, the conservatory, lots of green space, the Black Sun sculpture for cute pics, and that historic water tower. Also, in the summer, they have a famous dahlia garden in bloom,” she said. “Also dim sum in the Chinatown International District is always a win to hang out with friends.”
So, what’s your favorite spot in or around Seattle? Send your response to [email protected]. Your suggestion might just be featured in an upcoming episode.
