Mehmet Ergun earns prize in solar category of Astronomy photographer of year competition


Turkish astrophotographer Mehmet Ergun secured third place in the Solar category of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year Competition, hosted by the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London.

Astrophotographers capture frames resembling scenes from science fiction, unseen to the naked eye, using advanced technological equipment to craft unique compositions. In this prestigious competition held by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, a Turkish talent, Mehmet Ergun, received recognition in the Sun category for his captivating portrayal of space through his photographs, clinching the third prize in the Solar category.

Ergun utilized specialized equipment and filters alongside a 500-millimeter lens for his award-winning photograph.

The Solar category within the 15th edition of the “Astronomy Photographer of the Year Contest” stands out for its heightened difficulty level. Over 4,000 submissions poured in from 64 countries, solidifying its status as the most esteemed astronomy photography contest worldwide. Ergün’s acclaimed photograph, showcasing a substantial solar flare, was captured using a 500-millimeter lens and required the use of special equipment and filters.

“I attained third place thanks to my sun photo,” expressed Mehmet Ergun, the Turkish Astrophotographer renowned for capturing elusive moments in space. “I’ve garnered several international accolades through my photography.
