Melo And Borg Earn Singles Wins In First Match Of The Spring


Youngstown, OH—The Niagara women’s tennis team competed for the first time this spring as they traveled to Youngstown State to take on the Penguins. The Purple Eagles fell 5-2 in their first non-conference match of the spring.

Doubles

Jaida Borg and Elena Mayet were teamed up in first doubles and despite winning two of the first three games they ultimately fell 6-4 in their first match of the spring.

Enrica Favaron and freshman Larisa Kotok were paired together in the second doubles position. The duo won the first game but could not generate momentum as they fell 6-3.

The newest Purple Eagle Gabriela Melo made her collegiate debut with Coral Rodruguez in third doubles. After dropping the first game they won two straight matches to take an early 2-1 lead. Despite the early lead the Penguins won the match 6-4.

Singles

Melo notched her first NCAA win as she was in fifth singles. She dropped her first set 6-4 but responded in the set with a 6-2 win to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker she won 11-9 for her first win in her first collegiate singles match.

Borg was the other winner for the Purple Eagles as she was in the third singles position. She won her opening set 7-5 before completing the sweep with a 7-6 win in the second set. It is Borg’s third win of the season, she is 3-0 this season in the third singles position.

Mayet was in the first singles position and fell 6-1, 6-1 in her first match of the spring.

Rodriguez fell in straight sets, she nearly forced a tiebreaker set but fell in the second set 7-6.

Freshman Valeria Mora played her first dual match of her collegiate career as she was in the fourth singles position. She fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Favaron fell in her first match of the spring in straight sets in the sixth singles position. She fell 6-4 in the first set and 6-0 in the second set.

Niagara is back in action on Jan. 27 as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell in their second non-conference match of the spring.
