Memphis basketball signee Mikey Williams facing 3 additional felony charges

Mikey Williams, who signed with Penny Hardaway’s Memphis basketball program last year, is facing three additional felony charges related to the shooting outside his California home earlier this year.

Appearing via teleconference during a scheduled court proceeding Tuesday, Williams was scheduled to be arraigned by Superior Court judge Kathleen M. Lewis. But, since he was not present, Deputy District Attorney George Modlin said he would rather proceed when Williams was in the courtroom.

Lewis ordered Williams to be present Friday to be arraigned. It is expected Williams’ pending trial date will be set.

Memphis issued a statement in September saying Williams will not be permitted to be part of the team until his legal issues have been resolved. Williams is enrolled in online classes.

In April 2023, Williams, who finished his high school career at San Ysidro, was arrested on five charges of assault with a weapon and one count of firing into an occupied vehicle. His arrest stems from a shooting that occurred outside his home on March 27. Williams, the alleged shooter, pleaded not guilty to the initial charges.

If convicted on all charges, Williams could spend up to 30 years in prison.

The three additional charges against Williams come as a result of testimony at his preliminary hearing on Oct. 10. That testimony indicated six people were in the vehicle that was fired upon − which led to an additional count of assault with a weapon − and that Williams made threats before the shooting, which precipitated two counts related to that.
