FRESNO — The final match of Bill Shine’s career as head coach of the Menlo girls’ tennis team was a historic one.

Things didn’t go Menlo’s way in the CIF USTA Girls’ Tennis Championships, with the Lady Knights falling 7-0 to Southern California champion Mater Dei in the season finale Saturday at Fresno Pacific University. Still, it was the first state championship match in California interscholastic Federation history.
