Men’s Basketball Begins Season at Colgate on Monday

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The 2023-24 men’s basketball campaign is upon us as the Brown Bears hit the road to tip off the new season at Colgate on Monday, November 6 at 7 p.m.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Scott Cordischi and Brown Athletic Hall of Famer Russ Tyler ’71 bring you the action on the Varsity Network live from Wesley M. Cotterell Court.

INSIDE THE SERIES
Colgate leads the series 12-6 with last year’s 77-68 defeat over the Bears in the Pizzitola Sports Center. Monday will be Colgate’s first home game against the Bears since 1993 and the third in the series history.

ABOUT THE RETURNERS
“One of the greatest strengths of our program is our continuity and stability, which has led to a really strong culture of player development,” said Mike Martin ’04, Men’s Basketball Head Coaching Chair. “When you return 12 players from last year’s team, including four starters and eight regular rotation players, you have that continuity and stability. We lost some terrific guards from last year, but we are confident in the work our returning players have put in over the offseason to step into new roles and opportunities. We return every frontcourt player who contributed last year and look to that to be a strength of our team.”

ABOUT THE NEWCOMERS
“We are high on our five freshmen,” said Martin. “They all come to us from really strong high school programs with great coaches. Each has played at a very high level in AAU or FIBA basketball. They are all working hard as they transition to Division 1 basketball but they’re learning from our returning players and competing with them for opportunities. When you have the type of roster stability we have, it’s a great thing for our freshmen to be able to learn from their older teammates.”

ABOUT BROWN
Led by junior Kino Lilly Jr., 2023 First Team All-Ivy and 2022 Ivy Rookie of the Year, Brown returns three starters in addition to the Maryland native – Kalu Anya, Nana Owusu-Anane and Aaron Cooley.

Felix Kloman, Kimo Ferrari, Landon Lewis, Malachi Ndur are just a few of the key rotation pieces on the veteran Bears squad.

Brown was picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll.

CAPTAINS
For the second consecutive season, Nana Owusu-Anane was voted a team captain. He will be joined by fellow Canadian Malachi Ndur.

ABOUT COLGATE
The Raiders are coming off a Patriot League Championship and were picked the unanimous favorite in the preseason poll. Keegan Records was named the Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while Ryan Moffatt also appeared on the Preseason All-League Team.

Last year, Records set a Patriot League record for best single-season field goal percentage (.675), while Moffatt’s .441 three-point shooting clip ranks third in league history.
