Men’s basketball falls at Colgate 84-49

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate (4-3) used a huge first-half run to build a 21-point halftime bulge and the three-time reigning Patriot League champions defeated visiting Binghamton men’s basketball (4-4) 84-49 Wednesday night at Cotterell Court. The Bearcats entered the game having won four of five but were dealt their largest setback of the season.

Binghamton led 15-12 with 11:47 remaining in the first half before the Raiders rattled off a devastating 27-3 run spanning 7+ minutes. Playing without injured sharpshooter Dan Petcash, BU was held to three field goals over the final 11 minutes of the half and trailed 44-23 at intermission.

In the second half, Colgate shot 56 percent to thwart any BU comeback bid. The Raiders canned 12 three-pointers in the game on 52% accuracy while BU hit just 3-of-17 from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Tymu Chenery led BU with nine points. Senior forward Nehemiah Benson added eight points with five boards and graduate guard Symir Torrence kept up his America East assist-leading pace with five assists in 26 minutes.

“Offensively we were out of sync and they just took it to us tonight,” head coach Levell Sanders said. “We didn’t do a good job of moving the ball and were passive and if you do that against that kind of team, it’s makes for a tough night. We knew we would have to make some shots to make them come our of how they protect the paint but we couldn’t execute our offense. We have to go back to the drawing board and get better.”

Binghamton next travels to North Easton, Mass. for a Saturday afternoon tilt at Stonehill.
