BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The UAH men’s basketball team was voted first in the 2023 Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll announced on Wednesday morning.

The league additionally unveiled its 2023 Preseason All-GSC squad, which features UAH junior Luke Burnett as one of the five members of the preseason squad.

A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Burnett was the top three-point shooter in NCAA Division II with a nation-leading 108 three-pointers made in the 2022-23 campaign. Over 35 starts last season, Burnett averaged 29.2 minutes on the floor with 13.4 points per game to go along with 54 steals defensively.

The conference also announced its GSC Newcomer Watchlist, which features UAH incoming transfers Isaac Chatman from North Alabama and Tommy Murr from Lipscomb.

The Chargers reached the NCAA Division II South Region Championship last season for the seventh time in program history and the second under head coach John Shulman, with the team posting a 27-8 overall record and a 19-5 conference record to earn a GSC Regular Season Championship.

The Blue & White enter this season as the No. 23 ranked team in the NABC’s NCAA Division II Preseason Rankings with a total of 13 UAH players returning from last season’s squad.

UAH is set to begin its 2023-24 campaign in Miami Shores, Florida, next Friday and Saturday with matchups slated against Barry and reigning NCAA Division II National Champions and No. 2 ranked Nova Southeastern. The contest against NSU also serves as a rematch of the South Region championship game from this past March.

The Chargers first home action for the upcoming season will be Nov. 17-18 with the Bill Penney Crossover Classic at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall with games against No. 6 Lincoln Memorial and Fisk.
