CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s tennis team will be back in action Friday through Sunday at the final tournament of the fall season. 
 
The Vaqueros are returning to the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center in Corpus Christi for the Cooper Outdoor Advertising Islander Open. Matches will begin with doubles at 9 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 
 
UTRGV opened its fall season in Corpus at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open in September with a solid outing. Senior captain Emilien Burnel won the top singles and doubles draws, going unbeaten on the weekend. The young doubles duo of sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar and freshman Ivo Isqueiro won the Doubles Flight B title with a 3-0 weekend. 
 
The Vaqueros will look to build off their first tournament in Corpus with help from momentum created with a good outing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional last week. Burnel and junior Sam Whitehead advanced to the doubles round of 16 after picking up big wins over teams from Texas Tech and SMU. Isqueiro captured a singles victory over a Power Five opponent from TCU. 
 
UTRGV has shown good progress in its level of play and competitiveness on the court throughout the fall. The Vaqueros are ready to use this final fall tournament put themselves in a good place mentally and on the courts as they begin to look ahead to the dual match season in the spring.
