SAN ANTONIO –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s tennis team capped its two-match Saturday by defeating the St. Mary’s Rattlers, 6-1.
UTRGV (2-3) jumped on top, 1-0, after a nice performance in doubles with all new pairs. Senior Emilien Burnel and freshman Ivo Isqueiro gave the Vaqueros the early edge with a swift 6-3 victory at No. 1. St. Mary’s knotted things up with a win on court two.
The freshmen duo of Paolo Bonaguro and Will Roberts held strong when the doubles point came down to their court and secured the early lead with a good 6-4 win at No. 3.
The Vaqueros secured the victory with straight-set singles wins on the first, third and second courts. Burnel captured his third win in a row at No. 1 in dominant fashion, then freshman Santiago Serrano continued his strong weekend with a good win at No. 3. Sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2.
St. Mary’s got on the board with a win at No. 6, but UTRGV locked up the final matches. Isqueiro battled through the first set of his No. 4 match then controlled the second to get the win. Bonaguro picked up the first singles victory of his collegiate career, fighting through a tight first set before cruising in the second to win 7-5, 6-2 on the fifth court.
UTRGV is scheduled to play at UTSA Sunday at 12 p.m.
