Men’s Tennis Downs Nationally Ranked Opponent En Route to a 2-0 Day


CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 11 Harvard men’s tennis picked up their first wins of the season today by downing No. 21 NC State and Bryant in a double header inside of the Murr Center.  The Crimson opened its day by first downing the Wolf Pack, 6-1, following by a 6-0 sweep of the Bulldogs. 

Harvard Downs No. 21 NC State for First Win of the Season

To open the day, the Crimson faced its first ranked opponent of the year in No. 21 NC State.  Looking to pick up its first victory of the year, Harvard began the match by going up 1-0 after doubles play. Alan Yim and Henry von der Schulenburg won their match at the No. 3 position, 6-4, to pull the Crimson a match away from the doubles point.  Cooper Williams and Daniel Milavsky picked up their first win of the dual season to clinch doubles by downing Robin Catry and Fons van Sambeek (NC State), 6-3.  In the final doubles match Ronan Jachuck and Masato Perera led the No. 13 nationally ranked duo, 5-3, before play ended.
 
Moving into singles, Williams kept his momentum rolling downing the No. 120 nationally ranked player, Robin Catry (NC State), in straight sets to push the Crimson up, 2-0.  The Wolf Pack were able to collect their first and only point of the day at the No. 5 position but it was all Crimson the remainder of the match.  Ronan Jachuck pulled the Crimson within a match of the win by taking the third set against Luca Staeheli (NC State).
 
Ultimately, with two match outstanding, Melchior Delloye solidified the Crimson win with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Martin Borisiouk (NC State) at the No. 6 position.  Henry von der Schulenburg and Daniel Milavsky each closed out their wins in the third set to bring the Harvard win total to six on the day.

Harvard Completes 2-0 Day with Win of Bryant

Looking to pick up its second win of the day, the Crimson started by sweeping doubles play against the Bulldogs.  All the Harvard duos were teaming up for the first time in 2023-24 prior to the Crimson 3-0 performance. 
 
Moving into singles Ronan Jachuck picked up his second win of the day by downing Jose Davila (Bryant) at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-2.  Masato Perera and David Lins both pulled out a pair of straight set victories by holding strong in second set tiebreakers. 
 
James MacDonald moved to 4-0 in 2023-24 and picked up his first collegiate dual match win by defeating Jean Christophe Baril (Bryant) at the No. 5 position.  After dominating the first set, 6-0, his opponent was able to even the score.  MacDonald locked down to take the final set 6-2 and secure the victory. 
 
David Arkow notched the final win of the day by dominating the tie-breaking third set, 10-0, over Diego Trejo (Bryant).

Harvard Highlights

  • Appearing in both matches, Ronan Jachuck contributed a pair of singles wins at the No. 1 and 4 positions.  With his two wins today, Jachuck improves to 3-0 on the year. 
  • Cooper Williams and Daniel Milavsky who rank No. 5 nationally, picked up their first doubles win of the season and improved to 14-3 overall in 2023-24. 
  • Williams picked up his first ranked win of the spring season by downing No. 120 Robin Catry (NC State) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. 
  • Appearing for the first time in dual action, James MacDonald picked up his first career collegiate singles victory to move to 4-0 on the season. 
  • Daniel Milavsky remains undefeated in singles play this spring with his win today after taking down the No. 80 nationally ranked player in the team’s opening match. 
  • With wins today, Harvard remains undefeated all-time against both squads and improves to 3-0 against the Wolf Pack and 6-0 against the Bulldogs. 

Next Up

Harvard will next weekend UCLA, Northwestern, and Ole Miss to Cambridge, Mass. for the ITA Kickoff Weekend.  The Crimson will open up play against UCLA on Saturday, January 27 at 10:00 a.m. from the Murr Center.
