VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Drexel men’s tennis began its spring season with a 6-1 victory against the Villanova Wildcats on Friday afternoon.
Villanova earned the early edge after capturing the doubles point. The Wildcats won the top-seeded match. Egor Kirakosov and Alessio Azzalini evened doubles play at one after they defeated their opponents, 6-4 in the No. 3 match. Villanova then defeated Hussein El Tawil and Will Burridge, 6-4 to secure the point.
In singles play, El Tawil started Drexel on the right foot, capturing the second-seeded match, 6-2, 6-1. Burridge followed with an identical 6-2, 6-1 finish to put Drexel ahead, 2-1. In the No. 1 spot, Alan Jesudason captured a three-set victory, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. With the match on the line, Azzalini secured the victory for the Dragons in the No. 4 spot, 7-6, 6-4.
Alex De Sousa finished off his opponent in the third spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, and Josue Guzman closed out the match with a hard-fought three set match in the No. 6 spot, 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday, January 28 against the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers. It is the home-opener for the Dragons and first serve is slated for 1 p.m.
