ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy men’s tennis team won both doubles points and a combined five straight-set singles matches to post victories over George Mason and Mount St. Mary’s, Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (4-0) defeated the Patriots (0-3) by the score of 5-2 and the Mountaineers (2-1) by the score of 6-1.
Navy 5, George Mason 2
It was no surprise that the Navy-George Mason match was a close one. The Mids entered the day having defeated the Patriots in each of the last eight matches, but four of those matches were decided by the score of 4-3, including last year’s match.
Today, Navy won the doubles point with 6-2 victories by its No. 2 team of Aniketh Ayinala and J.J. Etterbeek and its No. 3 tandem of Tommy Kim and Jake Young.
Four of the six singles matches would be extended to three sets.
Luke Garner won a straight-set match at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to make the score 2-0. Jake Young followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles. Sasha Panyan clinched the match for the Mids with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Navy’s remaining point was earned by Kim with his 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 flight.
Navy 6, Mount St. Mary’s 1
The Mids swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Herrick Legaspi and Nathan Nguyen did not surrender a game in winning at the No. 1 flight. The No. 2 team of Matthew McNair and Nicholas Nguyen won a 6-3 decision. Completing the sweep was a 7-5 victory by the No. 3 duo of Eric Liu and Zach Quattro.
Winning straight-set singles matches were Graydon Buckingham at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1), Legapsi at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0) and Nathan Nguyen at No. 3 (6-2, 7-5). Jason Kim won a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (10-3) match at No. 4 and Steve Nguyen posted a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 2.
