FORT MYERS, Fla. –Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis earned six wins over Purdue University Saturday on the second day of the Bonita Bay Classic.
“Honestly, I’m shocked and extremely happy with how the team competed today,” said head coach Davidson Kozlowski. “I think everyone watching could see the intensity, the focus, and discipline these guys were playing with. As a coach, it was awesome. I’m hoping we can use this as our new baseline and standard of the program as we continue to work, develop, and improve.”
The Eagles began the day by sweeping all three of the doubles matches. Eric Oncins and Hugo Magnusson won 6-4.
Pablo Paternostro and CJ Smith paired up and pushed through a close fight to win 7-6 (3). Mika Bunjes and Harry Michalowski got the doubles sweep for the Eagles with a 6-2 decision.
In singles, Paternostro delivered a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 victory over Juan Velasquez before Philipp Bosse defeated Purdue’s Alexander Ekstrand with a well-fought 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 decision. Mika Bunjes rallied through to defeat Henrik Villanger 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
Ninad Raut was victorious 6-3, 6-2 over Diego Cuerto De Romana from Virginia Tech.
The Eagles will return to the courts tomorrow for the final day of the Bonita Bay Classic to take on Virginia Tech at 12:30 p.m.
