PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia men’s tennis team will be represented well at the ITA Northeast Super Regional Championships this weekend as the Lions will send three doubles teams and six individuals to compete.
Representing the Lions in doubles play will be the teams of Michael Zheng/Theo Winegar, Ishaan Ravichander/Henry Ruger and Jayden Templeman/Sachin Palta. The duos of Ravichander/Ruger and Templeman/Palta advanced to the super regionals after dominating performances in the regional two weeks ago. Zheng and Winegar qualified for the supers without having to play in the regional tournament.
Zheng and Winegar will kick things off for the Lions at 10 a.m. Friday against Yale’s Theo Dean and Vignesh Gogineni. Ravichander and Ruger will also get started at 10 a.m. as they face Hofstra’s Ostap Kovalenko and Johnathan Mahrt. Templeman and Palta are slated for an 11 a.m. start Friday against Drexel’s Alan Jesudason and Alex De Soussa.
The doubles round of 16 will be played Friday. Doubles play continues Saturday with the quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Doubles concludes with the final on Sunday.
Columbia will be represented by Zheng, Alex Kotzen, Ravichander, Hugo Hashimoto, Max Westphal and Ruger in singles action. Zheng, Kotzen, Hashimoto and Westphal qualified for the supers without having to play in the regional tournament. Ravichander and Ruger played their way through the regionals and earned spots in super regional tournament.
Earning the top seed in singles, Zheng will get started Friday at 11:30 a.m. with a match against Yale’s Aidan Reilly. No. 5 seed Alex Kotzen will also play an 11:30 a.m. match against Penn’s Parashar Bharadwaj. Ravichander will face Princeton’s Top Nidunjianzan at 11:30 a.m. as well. Hashimoto will get started against Yale’s Vignesh Gogineni at 1 p.m. Westphal and Ruger will then play at 2:30 p.m. to cap off the first day of action. Westphal will meet Princeton’s Sebastian Sec, while Ruger will play Cornell’s Radu Papoe.
The singles round of 32 will be played Friday with the round of 16 following on Saturday. The quarterfinal matches will be played Sunday and the tournament will wrap up with the semifinals and final on Monday.
The Lions in singles and doubles will be playing to advance to the ITA Fall National Championships starting November 1 in San Diego.
