The St. John’s men’s tennis team opened its 2024 spring schedule by beating Bryant, 6-1, on Tuesday at Cunningham Park.
The Red Storm (1-0) have won seven of its last eight season-openers, including six straight.
The Johnnies won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead before dominating the singles slate, winning on five of the six individual contests, to clinch the season-opening victory.
2023 All-BIG EAST First Team selection Carl Gustavsson and newcomer Leonardo Mileikowsky set the tone early on the no. 3 doubles court, beating Bryant’s Diego Trejo and Jean-Chrstophe Baril, 6-3. Leon Petko and Ignacio Vinas clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies in their St. John’s dual-match debuts, taking down Diego Serra Sparrow and Marcus Macaulay, 7-5, in the no. 2 doubles matchup.
Gustavsson earned the second point of the day for the Red Storm on the no. 3 singles court, dominating Sparrow, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Ryota Kaneda gave St. John’s a 3-0 lead, taking down Baril in convincing fashion in the no. 5 singles spot 6-1, 6-1. The Johnnies made it 4-0 on the no.1 court as Fransico Bascón defeated Jose Davila in consecutive sets, 6-3, 6-0.
The Bulldogs took their lone point of the day on the no. 2 singles court, but the Johnnies were able to close out their first win of the season behind wins on the no. 4 and no. 6 courts from Mileikowsky and Danilo Raicevic.
Bryant fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss as the Red Storm claimed its fifth victory over the Bulldogs since 2010.
The Red Storm return to action tomorrow against Quinnipiac at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Queens. The Johnnies have defeated the Bobcats by identical 6-1 scores in each of the past two seasons.
