Men’s Tennis Winners Of First Dual Of 2024


CHICAGO – University of Chicago men’s tennis kicked off play in 2024 with their first dual of the season and hosted the University of North Dakota at XS Tennis in the Windy City. The match was as close as you could get but the Maroons came up big in singles action to grab the 4-3 overall victory over UND.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • University of Chicago (1-0) opened the afternoon in the traditional way with doubles play against the University of North Dakota. The Maroons were able to come away with one victory out of the third spot with Jack Wong and Robert Zhang winning 7-5 but since the match was being played according to D-I rules, the Fighting Hawks took the first team point.
  • Down by one entering singles play, the Maroons started their comeback when Arjun Asokumar won in the second slot with a 7-5, 6-3 score. UChicago’s next point came in the sixth spot with a 6-4, 6-3 victory coming from Pat Otero.
  • With the match still anyone’s game after losses in the third and fourth positions, Derek Hsieh saved three match points in the process of winning his number three battle with a final result of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6). The overall win for the Maroons came when Emil Grantcharov clinched the contest in the top spot with a thrilling 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-2 victory.

WHO’S ON DECK
With their exhibition match tomorrow against Roosevelt University postponed, the next time the Maroons will hit the courts will be Friday, February 2nd when they take on North Central. First serve from XS Tennis in Chicago is slated for 6:00 pm.
