PRINCETON, N.J. – The six singles individuals and three doubles teams representing the Columbia men’s tennis team at the ITA Northeast Super Regionals in Princeton wrapped up action as sophomore singles player Michael Zheng was ousted in the semifinals match Monday afternoon.
Zheng had the longest run in the tournament as he posted three wins to earn a trip to the singles semifinals Monday. Zheng battled past Yale’s Aidan Reilly, 6-4, 7-6(1) and Harvard’s David Lins, 6-3, 6-3 to meet teammate Alex Kotzen in the quarterfinals. Zheng topped Kotzen with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win to meet Cooper Williams (Harvard) in the semis. Zheng got off to a great start by taking the first set, 7-5 before Williams would bounce back to win the last two sets, 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the win.
Kotzen earned two wins in the tournament before being knocked out by Zheng in the quarterfinals. Kotzen took a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 win over Penn’s Parashar Bharadwaj in the first match. He then defeated Buffalo’s Daniils Snaiders, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16. Ishaan Ravichander notched a win in his first match, taking a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory against Princeton’s Top Nidunjianzan. Hugo Hashimoto, Max Westphal and Henry Ruger were each defeated in their first matches Friday.
The doubles teams of Ravichander/Ruger and Jayden Templeman and Sachin Palta each posted a win in the doubles round of 16. Both pairs were defeated in the quarterfinal match. Zheng and Theo Winegar were defeated in their first doubles match.
The Lions will wrap up the fall season at the Yale Invitational starting Friday, November 3 in New Haven, Connecticut.
