Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Viking Invitational – Western Michigan University Athletics


CLEVELAND – The Western Michigan men’s tennis team wrapped up the three-day Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State, over the weekend.
The tournament featured tennis athletes from CSU, Buffalo, Dayton, , IUPUI Holy Cross, Youngstown State and the Broncos.

SINGLES RECAP
Freshman Dimitri Moriarty opened the weekend with a win over Eli Wilbin from Youngstown State after Wilbin withdrew from the match. The then fell to Dayton’s Luis Saraiva 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. He later took on YSU’s Onder Balci in the back draw, but fell 6-2, 6-1. Moriarty then picked up two-set wins over Lucas McManus from Holy Cross and Eli Mercer from IUPUI. He played an additional match against Nico Jamison from CSU but fell 6-2, 6-2. 

Freshman Drew Evans opened with a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) win over Cleveland State’s Austin Staiger. After falling to Harry Fouzas from YSU, Evans dropped to the back draw and fell to Yuhan Jiang from Buffalo and Eli Mercer from IUPUI. He also fell to Ty Rothchild of CSU.

Freshman Alvin Altman dropped all four of his singles matches, while senior Ferdinand Schlueter dropped his main draw match before defeating Buffalo’s Ryan Thompson 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) and Dayton’s Nikola Puric 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the back draw.

DOUBLES RECAP
Schlueter and Evans were the only pairing to pick up wins in doubles action for the Broncos. The duo defeated Gregg and Flender from Holy Cross, 6-4, to open the main draw. The pair then fell to Gedlitschka and Abboud from Cleveland State. They split matches in the back draw, beating Favier and Wilbin from Youngstown State before losing to Jamison and Zimcosky from the Vikings. 

Western Michigan closes out its 2023 portion of the season this weekend at West Hills Athletic Club when it hosts the MAC Indoors on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
