Mental health expert provides tips on how to manage seasonal depression

DELMARVA – As you prepare for your holiday festivities, mental health experts want you to keep in mind that everyone may not be in the cheerful spirit.

Registered Psychology Associate under the Supervision of Dr. Samantha Scott Heather Brown said the season can be difficult for those experiencing mental health issues and other disorders.

Brown added that it can trigger anxiety, depression, and excessive alcohol and substance abuse for those looking for ways to cope.

For those who may be suffering, she provided us with some helpful tips. “Maybe you celebrate it in a different way or go on a trip for Christmas instead of having it at your house. Also, find ways to celebrate the individual that you lost. Use your support system and talk about what you’re feeling,” Brown said.

Brown told 47ABC its important to keep an eye on warnings signs like feeling tired or anxious. She also said if you’re in need of help, it could be a great time to seek out a mental health professional.
