ABOUT THE NEW INITIATIVE AND HOW YOU CAN HELP. WE DO A HOLIDAY DRIVE EVERY YEAR, AND THIS YEAR WE WERE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WHAT SOMETHING WE COULD DO TO GET THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY INVOLVED. METRO COUNCIL PRESIDENT MARCUS WINKLER SAYS THE COUNCIL DECIDED ON A CITYWIDE CANNED FOOD DRIVE. THAT NEED IS IS SIGNIFICANT. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS, AREN’T GOING HUNGRY. WE ARE SEEING A HUGE INCREASE IN REQUESTS FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE, ALMOST A 40% INCREASE ACROSS ACROSS THE CITY FOR PEOPLE NEEDING FOOD. THE DONATIONS WILL GO TO THE ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY MINISTRIES, WHICH IS MADE UP OF 13 DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS. GIRARD IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE EASTERN AREA COMMUNITY MINISTRIES. SHE SAYS ANYONE WHO IS IN NEED CAN BENEFIT FROM THE DRIVE. THERE’S VERY LITTLE QUALIFICATIONS IF SOMEONE NEEDS FOOD, WE WANT TO GET YOU FOOD. SO JUST REACH OUT TO YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY MINISTRY AND WE’LL GET YOU SET UP. METRO COUNCIL SAYS THEY’LL ACCEPT ANY KIND OF CANNED VEGETABLE THEY’D EVEN TAKE BOXED POTATOES. BUT WHAT THEY’D REALLY LIKE IS SOME PROTEIN. SO HEARTY CHICKEN AND HEARTY BEEF SOUPS ARE WONDERFUL. DICED TOMATOES, TOMATO PRODUCTS ARE SO VERSATILE YOU CAN MAKE SAUCES AND STEWS AND THINGS WITH THAT. SO TOMATO PRODUCTS ARE GREAT AND POTATO PRODUCTS AS WELL BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPER FILLING. THE DRIVE KICKED OFF ON MONDAY AND WILL RUN THROUGH DECEMBER 11TH. THERE ARE MORE THAN 20 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AROUND THE CITY WHERE FOOD CAN BE DONATED ONCE THE FOOD IS COLLECTED, IT WILL BE DISTRIBUTED EVENLY TO ALL 13 DIFFERENT MINISTRIES. AS A CITY, THERE’S LOTS OF THINGS THAT WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT WHERE WE DISAGREE ON AND WHERE THERE ARE CHALLENGES. AND I THINK THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO COME TOGETHER REALLY FOCUS ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS, AND THAT’S HELPING OTHERS AND ALL OF US WORKING TOGETHER TOWARDS A COMMON G
