Michael Cera Is Open to a ‘Barbie’ Spinoff That Will Explore His Wacky Character

Michael Cera, who captured hearts with his depiction of the clumsy and adorable Allan in Greta Gerwig’s breakthrough film, has indicated interest in a spinoff based on his character.

During a recent interview with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, the actor highlighted Greta Gerwig’s eight-time Oscar-nominated picture and his now-favorite portrayal of Ken’s closest pal.

“[It was] an] amazing thing to be a part of,” he told Jimmy Fallon of his role in 2023’s biggest picture. “I mean, I couldn’t believe that I had a chance to be a part of it. It just came out of nowhere for me. I think I was like a last-minute replacement of someone, the person they actually wanted.”

Cera joked on the unique nature of such a project, given Allan’s scant language and largely passive presence in the original picture. “It would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there,” he remarked, implying the possibility of an odd narrative.

When the late-night host asked him about a prospective Allan spinoff, the actor was surprised to find that there had been rumours about it.

“I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there,” he was quoted as saying. “He’s kind of like an inactive character. He kind of just stands [there]. For me, the biggest inspiration for the character was Hans Moleman, that character in The Simpsons. He just stands there all the time. For me, that’s like the core of the character.”
