Since being recognized at the previous 2023 Sensors Converge Conference, Microchip Technology has demonstrated exceptional growth and innovation, solidifying its position as a leader in the semiconductor industry. The company’s impressive achievements over the past year have culminated in its recognition as Company of the Year in the 2024 Best of Sensors Awards ceremony.

Microchip’s commitment to innovation is clear in its launch of over 25 new products across its diverse portfolio since June 2023. These new offerings spanned a wide range of technologies, including microcontrollers, microprocessors, FPGAs, connectivity solutions, power management, timing devices, memory, and security products. Notable introductions include high-performance 32-bit MCUs with embedded hardware security monitors, an expanded portfolio of automotive-grade remote temperature sensors, and advanced solutions for 800G Active Electrical Cables (AECs) in generative AI networks.

The company has also made significant strides in addressing emerging industry needs. For instance, Microchip introduced the MPLAB® Machine Learning Development Suite, enabling embedded designers to easily incorporate machine learning into MCUs and MPUs. They also demonstrated their commitment to meeting complex automotive and embedded security requirements with the launch of the TrustAnchor TA101 Security IC and TrustFLEX CEC1736 devices.

Charlene Soucy, presenter at the Best of Sensors Awards, highlighted Microchip’s exceptional performance:

“Microchip’s  commitment to global expansion is evident through substantial investments in facilities, engineering labs, and talent acquisition in key markets like India and the UK. Their resilience in navigating industry cycles is demonstrated through strategic decisions that prioritize their workforce’s well-being and collaborative efforts to overcome challenges. Their ethos of fostering innovation and operational agility has positioned them as a leader in the semiconductor industry.”

Microchip’s global expansion efforts have been noteworthy. The company has launched a $300 million multi-year investment initiative to expand its presence in India. In the UK, Microchip has significantly expanded its strategic R&D commitment with a new design center in Cambridge. These investments not only broaden the company’s global footprint but also tap into diverse pools of engineering talent.

In the automotive sector, Microchip has made significant strides. The company expanded its Detroit Automotive Technology Center in Novi, Michigan, creating a 24,000-square-foot facility where automotive clients can explore new technologies and collaborate with technical experts. This expansion, coupled with the acquisition of ADAS and digital cockpit connectivity pioneer VSI Co. Ltd., strengthens Microchip’s position in the automotive networking market.

Microchip’s commitment to supply chain resilience is evident in its partnership expansion with TSMC, enabling specialized 40 nm manufacturing capacity at Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. This initiative, focused on specialized 40 nm processes, aims to enhance Microchip’s supply chain robustness.

The company’s adaptability in navigating industry cycles has been a key factor in its success. Microchip’s approach of shared sacrifices during challenging times and shared rewards during strong business environments has fostered a resilient and committed workforce. This strategy has enabled the company to maintain full staffing levels and continue innovating even during periods of business uncertainty.

Microchip Technology’s recognition as Company of the Year at the 2024 Best of Sensors Awards highlights its pivotal role in advancing sensor technologies and integrated solutions. From its beginnings as a spinoff of General Instrument’s microelectronics division in 1987, Microchip has grown into a global leader in microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog, and Flash IP integrated circuits. As the sensors industry evolves, companies like Microchip Technology play a large role in driving progress and enabling new applications.
