MIM hosts “Experience Cuba” weekend celebration of Cuban music and culture


The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) will host “Experience Cuba,” a weekend celebration of Cuban music, dance, and culture, on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and is included with museum admission. Museum members may attend for free.

The event will immerse visitors in the vibrant musical heritage of Cuba through live performances, hands-on activities, dance workshops, and educational talks. Programming is supported in part by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture and the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Highlights of the weekend include:

  • Curator Talk: Living the Music in Cuba – A guided look into the role of music in Cuban daily life, featuring instruments from MIM’s Cuban collection (10:30–11 a.m. daily).

  • Dance Workshop: Phoenix Salsa Dance – Learn the rhythms and steps of rumba guaguancó with instructors Lawrence Garcia and Jewel Hughes (12:15–12:45 p.m. daily).

  • Live Music: Ritmo Latino – A Latin jazz band performing salsa, cumbia, cha-cha, and other Cuban styles (1:30–2:15 p.m. daily).

  • Jaleo (Saturday only) – A Latin jazz fusion ensemble performing from 3:15 to 4 p.m.

  • Marcos Crego Trio – Remembrance of Havana (Sunday only) – A performance by Grammy-nominated pianist Marcos Crego, blending traditional and contemporary Cuban rhythms (3:15–4 p.m.).

Additional activities include a craft station where guests can make their own güiro instruments, a themed photo booth, and Cuban-focused offerings in the MIM Store, including books and music by iconic artists such as Celia Cruz and the Buena Vista Social Club. Café Allegro will offer global cuisine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All activities will take place at MIM, located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd. in Phoenix.
