MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota tennis program will begin its 2024 spring season on Saturday, hosting a double header against Marquette and Lindenwood. The Gophers will face Marquette at 12:00 p.m. (CT) and then Lindenwood at 4:00 p.m. (CT) at Baseline Tennis Center. Each match will be free for fans to attend.
Saturday will also mark the spring season debuts for both Marquette and Lindenwood.
Minnesota wrapped up their fall season with the Drake Bulldog Classic in early November. At the tournament, the team went 13-4 in singles and 3-4 in doubles.
The Competition
The Gophers are 14-1 all-time against Marquette. The squads first met in October 1987 and subsequently played in 1989, 1995, 1999 (Minnesota’s lone loss), 2001, 2002, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023. In their most recent dual match on Feb. 4, 2023, the Gophers won 4-2.
On Saturday, Minnesota will face Lindenwood for the first time in program history.
Match Format
Play will begin with three doubles matches, followed by six singles matches. Doubles will be played as one set to six, with the first team to earn two doubles wins earning one team point. Each singles match will be worth one team point.
Gopher Participants
Six University of Minnesota student-athletes are set to participate in both singles and doubles: sophomores Sofia Pizzoni, Aiva Schmitz, Sofia Pinto, and Anali Kocevar, and freshmen Emma Belluomini and Mia Liepert are all to play on Saturday.
