STARKVILLE — Mississippi State basketball coach Chris Jans doesn’t have to do much research to make sure his team is aware of the threat Nicholls State poses Friday.

Two weeks ago, Nicholls (3-3) went to Baton Rouge and beat LSU. One year ago, Nicholls was a missed 3-pointer on the final possession away from upsetting an MSU team in the top 20.

With Mississippi State (5-0) back in the national rankings this week – sitting at No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 – Jans is aware of the challenge the upcoming mid-major foe brings to Starkville.

“They’re a very good basketball team,” Jans said Tuesday. “They’ve had the big win. They’re very athletic. They’re long. They play really hard. It’s going to be a challenge for us. We’re going to see a lot of zone more than likely. They employ a matchup-type zone that is similar to what Southern Miss ran against us.”
