Mountaineers open spring tennis season with two sweeps on Saturday

West Virginia built off its promising fall season on Saturday, defeating Duquesne and Morgan State 7-0 each at home.

The double slate of matches began at 10 a.m. against the Duquesne Dukes and was followed by the Morgan State match at 3 p.m. WVU won each of its four doubles and 12 singles matches of the day to complete the sweeps.

Against Duquesne, redshirt sophomore Maja Dodik and freshman Maya Bordereau won 6-1 to start the day in doubles, with graduate students Ting-Pei Chang and Love-Star Alexis winning their match 6-4 soon after to earn WVU’s doubles point.

Dodik and Bordereau repeated the 6-1 victory against Morgan State’s Edvokimova and Jankovic. Senior Momoko Nagato and junior Michaela Kucharova led 5-4 before the other matches concluded against Duquesne but secured a 6-0 victory in their second match. Alexis and Chang led in their unfinished Morgan State match 5-2.

Alexis, Chang, Nagato, Dodik, and Bordereau each played in singles against both teams, winning all matches in two sets. Bordereau’s matches, which she won 6-3, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-4 were her first as a Mountaineer.

Junior Tatiana Lipatova took the sixth singles spot against Duquesne, winning 6-3, 6-0 in her first match of the year. Catherine Wassick, who won her only singles match in the fall season, played against Morgan State.

Wassick’s match was the only of the day to go to three sets, with the junior making a comeback against the Bears’ Iva Jankovic. Jankovic won the first set six games to none before Wassick took set two 7-5. Wassick won the tiebreak set 11-9.

Love-Star Alexis, who served as WVU’s top singles player, won both of her matches handily, taking the first 6-3, 6-2 against Duquesne and the second 6-3, 6-3. Momoko Nagato won 6-3, 7-5 against Duquesne and 6-1, 6-1 over Murray State at the Mountaineers’ number two spot.
