Linnentown Lane is welcoming a mural in the coming months.
The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government has created an opportunity for artists to submit applications to be considered for public art in Linnentown Lane. The goal of this artwork will be to capture the joy and sense of life in Linnentown, while also speaking to the hardships the people of this town had once faced through their displacement and the legacy their descendants have inherited.
Linnentown, a historically Black neighborhood near the University of Georgia, was demolished due to an urban renewal project in the 1960s, displacing approximately 50 families to build dormitories for the university.
The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission will review, evaluate and select from the submitted applications for county-funded public art commissions. The application deadline is Friday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
