Gov. Phil Murphy will serve as the Democratic Governors Association finance chairman in 2024, when eleven states will be electing governors.
Murphy served his second stint as DGA chairman in 2023, helping Democrats re-elect Gov. Andy Beshear in Kentucky and running a surprisingly close race in Mississippi. He also chaired the DGA in 2020 and is the only two-term chairman in history.
In 2021, while running for re-election, he also served as DGA finance chairman. Next year, he’ll hold the post while his wife, First Lady Tammy Murphy, seeks the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
All three Democratic governors up next year are term-limited: Roy Cooper in North Carolina, John Carney in Delaware, and Jay Inslee in Washington.
Democrats will also have their eye on New Hampshire, where GOP Gov. Chris Sununu is not running again. They’ll also have a good chance to flip Vermont if four-term Republican Gov. Phil Scott decides not to seek re-election.
Republican governors in Indiana, Missouri, and West Virginia are term-limited, and GOP incumbents in Montana, North Dakota, and Utah are up for re-election.
Murphy is a former Democratic National Committee finance chairman.
