Myers Park takes first in final statewide top 25 girls tennis rankings for 2023 season

There were four undefeated N.C. High School Athletic Association girls tennis champions, and all four were dominant for most of the year. In any given year, all four — plus undefeated N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A champ Charlotte Country Day — would have been good picks for the No. 1 spot in the final HighSchoolOT statewide top 25 rankings.

But Myers Park was the one to beat this year, and it’s the Mustangs who will finish the 2023 season ranked No. 1 in the second annual statewide HighSchoolOT girls tennis final rankings.

Myers Park pulled out a tough victory over a battle-tested New Hanover in the NCHSAA 4A championship match. The Mustangs were the preseason No. 3 team.

Previous final rankings

Charlotte Country Day was second, followed by New Hanover in third. Undefeated state champions Lake Norman Charter of 3A, Mount Airy of 1A, and Hendersonville of 2A followed suit. Green Hope, last year’s No. 1 team, was 22nd.

NCISAA state champs Cape Fear Academy of 3A, Gaston Day of 2A, and Ridgecroft School of 1A were unranked statewide but in their respective area code rankings.

In total, 18 teams in the preseason top 25 also made it in the final 25, with No. 8 Terry Sanford the highest of those who began the year unranked. Myers Park was third in the preseason.

The full rankings — a statewide Top 25 and Top 15 rankings for each of the state’s six area codes — are below.

The all-state team will be released next week.

In the final girls tennis area code rankings, Rocky Mount is ranked first in the 252, Panther Creek in the 919, New Hanover in the 910, Mount Airy in the 336, Myers Park in the 704, and Hendersonville in the 828.
