Naked Ape unveils ‘Afro Monks’ collection at South African Fashion Week

After a four-year break from the runway, the Naked Ape returned to South African Fashion Week this season to launch its autumn/winter 25 collection.

Titled Afro Monks, the collection is a tribute to African spirituality.

“Afro Monks is a tribute to the unassuming spiritual beings who walk among us with grace and purpose.

“Through this collection, I wanted to remind people of the power we each hold to contribute positively to the world while celebrating the richness of African craftsmanship,” said Shaldon Kopman, the creative director of the brand.

“Each piece is a meditation on simplicity, groundedness, and the mindful journey of self-care and spirituality.”

What makes this collection unique is that it was made of the finest natural fabrics, including bamboo, hemp, cotton, linen, raw silk and rayon.

“The Afro Monks collection features intricate hand embroidery, knitting, pleating, printing, and other artisanal techniques that showcase the mastery of African craftwork.

“The pieces not only exude luxury but also honour the ancient skills passed down through generations of African artisans,” added the designer.

Although founded in 2005, Naked Ape launched its debut collection in 2010, which was well received by local and international celebrities, including Boris Kodjoe, Laurence Fishburne and Samuel L. Jackson.
