AMERICAN CANYON — The American Canyon High girls basketball team goes into its annual Winter Wolf Classic home tournament with a 3-2 record after a 54-32 win over visiting Fairfield on Saturday.

Kamaya Jones had 15 points, Jordan Woodson 14 points and Ysabelle Locquiao 12 points to lead the Wolves as they improved to 3-2. Kaniya Bryant added eight points, Deja Montgomery six points and Camille Abcede two points.

“It was a good team win,” American Canyon head coach Angela Davis said. “We were able to get everybody in and get them some playing time and significant minutes that will help us down the road.”

She thought the Wolves moved the ball well.

“We’re still working on learning how to become a defensive team, to be able to move with our feet versus our hands, especially with the new rule in place. That’s still something we’re going to have to work on, but I liked the way we moved the ball. I like the way we got everybody involved and I hope that continues for us.”

American Canyon lost only three players to graduation from last year’s team, which tied Sonoma Valley and Casa Grande for the Vine Valley Athletic League title. The Wolves finished 19-10 overall after falling to Archie Williams in their North Coast Section Division 3 playoff opener.

“We have a lot of returners from last year,” Davis said, “so I think our chemistry is going to be fine.”

Davis pulled up Montgomery, who started for the varsity softball team last spring, and Essie Okpalaugo from the junior varsity “to add some speed and outside shooting for us. They’ve been a part of our program, so it’s not new to them adjusting, just maybe on the varsity level. But I think they’ve done a pretty good job overall of moving up to varsity.”

The coach said the team’s main goal is to be competitive.

“We’re not worried about who’s where (in the standings). If we just do our job and compete every night, we should be able to land pretty softly. Every night that we’re playing, we’re just trying to go 1-0. That’s it.”

Davis was asked to sum up her team in one word.

“Grit,” she replied. “We’ve had a couple of games where we’ve played from behind and most people would have probably counted us out. One of them didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to. But our fight and our tenacity are going to get us a couple of extra wins we probably shouldn’t sneak out of the gym with, and I’m OK with that. I like we fight.”

American Canyon opens the Winter Wolf Classic against De Anza at 8 p.m. Thursday. The Wolves’ JV will play Redwood at 5 p.m. The tournament continues Friday and wraps up Saturday.
