National and state college basketball roundup: UNC Wilmington upends No. 12 Kentucky


Trazarien White came off the bench to amass 27 points and 10 rebounds Saturday as UNC Wilmington stunned No. 12 Kentucky 80-73 at Rupp Arena.

UNCW, the alma mater of Kentucky coach John Calipari, went ahead to stay when Donovan Newby’s 3-pointer with 9:57 to go put the Seahawks (6-2) ahead 59-56. Reed Sheppard scored 25 for the Wildcats (6-2).

The Seahawks built a 14-point lead in the first half, leading 41-33 at the break. UNCW held off a second-half rally by the Wildcats (6-2), who were up 55-49 with 12:51 remaining.

Donovan Newby scored 15 points, Shykeim Phillips added 13 and KJ Jenkins had 11 for UNCW in the first meeting between the two schools.

No. 2 Arizona 82, Colgate 55: Caleb Love scored 14 points for the host Wildcats (7-0) against the Raiders (4-4). Oumar Ballo had 13 points and 10 rebounds as Arizona made a strong statement to move up to No. 1 in the polls, since top-ranked Purdue, No. 3 Marquette and No. 4 UConn all lost in the last couple of days.

Wisconsin 75, No. 3 Marquette 64: Max Klesmit scored all 21 of his points before halftime, Steven Crowl added 16, and the Badgers (6-2) capitalized on their rebounding superiority to beat the Golden Eagles (6-2) in Madison.

Wisconsin beat Marquette for a third straight season in a rivalry between schools separated by just 79 miles. Wisconsin outrebounded the Golden Eagles 38-23 and outscored them 18-2 in second-chance points. Both teams are 6-2.

No. 9 Baylor 91, Northwestern State 40: Jalen Bridges made four 3-pointers while scoring 16 points, freshman Yves Missi had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Baylor (8-0) beat the visiting Demons (1-7) from Louisiana.

No. 11 Gonzaga 89, Southern California 76: Ryan Nembhard and Dusty Stromer each scored 15 points in the Las Vegas Invitational. Graham Ike and Ben Gregg each added 14 for the Bulldogs. USC’s Boogie Ellis led all scorers with 25 points and added seven rebounds.

No. 13 Florida Atlantic 90, College of Charleston 74: Johnell Davis scored 24, and Vladislav Goldin added 17 points and 12 rebounds to propel FAU (7-1) in the finale of the Field of 68 Tipoff in Boca Raton, Florida.

Reyne Smith led the Cougars (4-4) with 14 points. At one point, FAU coach Dusty May and Charleston coach Pat Kelsey needed to be separated by referees.

Drexel 57, No. 18 Villanova 55: Amari Williams scored 12 points and blocked Villanova’s tying attempt with three seconds left to give the Dragons (5-3) an upset of the Wildcats (6-3) in the inaugural Big 5 Classic at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Wildcats fell to 0-3 in a series of Big 5 games designed to crown a city champion. Luke House scored 11 points for the Dragons, who beat an AP Top 25 team for the first time since 2010. Eric Dixon led the Wildcats with 21 points.

No. 20 Colorado State 86, Washington 81: Joel Scott led five players in double figures with 17 points and Colorado State won in Las Vegas.

Scott buried a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining in the game to break a 78-78 tie, and the Rams (8-0) held off the Huskies (4-3).

No. 24 Illinois 76, Rutgers 58: Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 23 as the Illini (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) beat the host Scarlet Knights (5-2, 0-1). Marcus Domask added 15 points for the Illini, who won at Rutgers for the first time since Feb. 25, 2018.

Bucknell 76, Penn State 67: The host Nittany Lions lost their fourth game in a row despite Qudus Wahab’s 18 points. Princess Anne High alum Kanye Clary had six assists and four points in 29 minutes for the Nittany Lions (4-4).

Jack Forrest led the Bisons (3-7) with 23 points, and Noah Williamson had 21.

TCU 84, Georgetown 83: Emanuel Miller scored 29 points and his desperation 3-point, running bank shot at the buzzer carried TCU (7-0) over the Hoyas (5-3) in a Big East/Big 12 Battle in Washington. But not without some controversy.

Replay showed Miller stepped on the right sideline with his left foot just before releasing the ball. Though officials reviewed the play, because they missed Miller stepping out-of-bounds in real time, by rule they couldn’t overturn the shot.

Former King’s Fork High star Jayden Epps, who led the Hoyas with 24 points, sank a pair of foul shots with 2.7 seconds left to give Georgetown an 83-81 lead.

State

George Mason 86, Toledo 77: Amari Kelly had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Patriots (7-1) in their victory in Ohio. Darius Maddox scored 14 points and added six rebounds, and Ronald Polite added 14 points.

Dante Maddox Jr. finished with 25 points for the Rockets (3-4).

Presbyterian 75, VMI 71: Trevon Reddish’s 14 points and seven rebounds paced the Blue Hose (6-3) in Lexington. Brennan Watkins led the Keydets (2-7) with 20 points and five assists. Tyran Cook added 16 points for VMI.

ACC

Georgia Tech 72, No. 7 Duke 68: Baye Ndongo scored 21 points, and his dunk with 44 seconds remaining pushed Georgia Tech ahead for good as the Yellow Jackets handed the Blue Devils their second loss this week to an unranked team.

Miles Kelly had 16 points and Kowacie Reeves Jr. had 14 points for Georgia Tech (4-2, 1-0 ACC). Jeremy Roach paced Duke (5-3, 0-1) with 20 points, and Kyle Filipowski and Caleb Foster added 12 each.

No. 8 Miami 62, Notre Dame 49: Matthew Cleveland scored 14 points, Norchad Omier and Nijel Pack each added 13 and host Miami (6-1, 1-0) beat Notre Dame (3-4, 0-1) in the ACC opener for both teams.

No. 17 North Carolina 78, Florida State 70: RJ Davis scored 27 points for UNC (7-3, 1-0 ACC), which ran off 22 unanswered points in the second half to rally past the Seminoles (4-3, 0-1) in Chapel Hill. Armando Bacot added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Tar Heels.

VCU transfer Jamir Watkins scored 17 points to lead the Seminoles, who led 45-31 early in the second half. But FSU went without a point for roughly six minutes and missed nine straight shots as UNC made its move.

N.C. State 84, Boston College 78, OT: DJ Horne led the visiting Wolfpack (5-2, 1-0 ACC) with 21 points.

Jaeden Zackery netted 20 for the Eagles (5-3, 0-1). His layup with 1:02 on the clock tied the game at 68 and closed the regulation scoring. Teammate Donald Hand Jr. of Virginia Beach sank two 3-pointers for his only baskets.

Women

No. 4 Iowa 99, Bowling Green 65: Caitlin Clark scored 24 for the host Hawkeyes (8-1) against the Falcons (5-2).

No. 7 Colorado 74, Air Force 58: Frida Formann’s 23 points guided the visiting Buffaloes (8-1) past the Falcons (4-4).

West Virginia 90, St. Bonaventure 50: JJ Quinerly scored a team-high 21 points for the host Mountaineers (7-0) against the Bonnies (2-6). The former Lake Taylor High star had four assists and shot 7 of 12 from the floor and 4 of 4 at the free-throw line.
