National team reviews rapidly advancing auto tech landscape


Muscat – The National Team for Smart Vehicle Regulation convened on Tuesday to address the key issues surrounding the rapidly advancing automotive technology landscape.

Held under the chairmanship of Imad bin Khamis al Shukaili, Director General of Standards and Metrology at Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, the meeting delved into crucial aspects of smart vehicle regulation, including regulatory compliance and global standards.

The primary focus of the session was to discuss measures to ensure Oman’s vehicle industry remains in line with international best practices, especially regarding vehicle cybersecurity and protection of electronic systems.

With growing integration of smart technologies into vehicles, including autonomous systems and connectivity features, ensuring robust security frameworks is essential for safeguarding  safety and privacy of consumers.

“The rapid evolution of automotive technology, especially in the fields of cybersecurity and system protection, demands a proactive approach to regulation. Our goal is to ensure that Oman remains at the forefront of global standards while safeguarding our national interests and ensuring public safety,” Shukaili said.

The team also examined implications of emerging technologies, such as connected and autonomous vehicles, and discussed strategies to align Oman’s regulatory framework with international standards. “This would help mitigate risks associated with cyber threats and ensure seamless integration of these technologies within Oman’s transportation infrastructure.”

The meeting’s outcome is expected to inform future policy and regulatory updates aimed at fostering innovation in the automotive sector, while simultaneously ensuring compliance with global safety and security standards.
