- Apple Sports is available in selected markets immediately
- App is compatible with iOS 17.2 and above
- More leagues to be added in coming months
Apple has released a dedicated sports app for iPhone in the US, UK, and Canada.
The launch coincides with the start of the new Major League Soccer (MLS) season, for which Apple is the exclusive global broadcaster, and marks the Cupertino-based company’s latest expansion into the world of sport.
Apple Sports complements the tech giant’s other first party applications for news, music, fitness, books, and film and television.
The app is designed for “speed and simplicity”, with Apple hoping familiar design principles and ease of use will help it stand out in a crowded marketplace.
Apple Sports currently offers live scores, stats and betting data for several major North American and European sports leagues currently in season, with more properties set to be added in the future.
In some markets, Apple will also direct users to the relevant streaming service so they can watch the game live.
Users can customise the app by selecting their favourite leagues and teams, the data for which is shared across multiple Apple applications – including Apple TV and Apple News.
Currently, the app supports MLS, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Hockey League (NHL), and men’s and women’s college basketball. It also offers the Premier League, Germany’s Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1 and Mexican Liga MX top-flight soccer leagues.
