On Tuesday, authorities and media reported that the death toll in Turkey and Syria climbed to eight due to a new and severe earthquake that struck two weeks after a terrible quake killed about 45,000 people.
Monday’s 6.4% magnitude earthquake in Turkey resulted in six fatalities and 294 injuries, including 18 in severe condition, according to Turkey’s emergency management agency. Pro-government media sites said that a mother and a girl died due to fear during the earthquake in the Syrian provinces of Hama and Tartus.
The earthquake’s epicenter was the village of Defne in the Turkish province of Hatay, which borders Syria. It was felt in Jordan, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, and even Egypt and was followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 5.8 with dozens of aftershocks.
Hatay was one of the worst-affected provinces in Turkey during the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on February 6. Hundreds of structures were demolished in the province, and Monday’s earthquake caused additional damage to structures. Also devastated was the governor’s office in Antakya, the historic center of Hatay.
Authorities have told earthquake victims not to enter the ruins of their homes, but some have done so in order to salvage anything they can. They were swept up in the latest earthquake.
At least 41,156 people were murdered in Turkey due to the big earthquake on February 6, followed nine hours later by a magnitude 7.5 tremor. The epicenter was in the southern province of Kahramanmaras. More than 110,000 buildings in 11 earthquake-stricken provinces of Turkey were either destroyed or so seriously damaged that they must be demolished.
In government-held Syria, a girl was slain in the western town of Safita, according to the Al-Watan newspaper, while a lady was killed in the earthquake-ravaged central city of Hama on February 6, according to the Sham FM radio station.
The White Helmets, the civil defense organization in rebel-held northwest Syria, reported that approximately 190 persons had various injuries, primarily broken bones, and bruises. It was stated that numerous fragile structures had collapsed and that there were no instances of individuals being trapped beneath the wreckage.
