ALPENA — The Alpena News has hired a new managing editor to oversee its newsroom operations and direct news, sports, and features coverage in the newspaper.

Torianna Marasco moved into the editor’s office in the newsroom on Monday, replacing former managing editor James Andersen, who left The News Oct. 6 for another job.

“We’re very excited to have Torianna on our team,” News Publisher/Editor Justin Hinkley said. “She brings great experience and a solid nose for news, and I know she’ll only improve upon the great coverage our readers expect.”

Marasco said she’s glad to be on The News staff and that she wants to “grow as an editor, as a writer and a journalist, and try new things.

“I like telling stories about people and getting news out there,” Marasco added. “I just like writing and telling people what’s going on in the community.”

Marasco said journalists simply need to “write what’s true. Be honest. That’s what journalism is.”

A native of Macomb, Marasco graduated with a writing degree from Grand Valley State University, where she was an editor at the InWriting Newsletter produced by the university writing department. She also interned at the Columbus, Ohio-based Liz Fe Lifestyle newsletter.

In her free time, Marasco enjoys reading, photography, painting, and “other artsy things.

“I’m very open to talking about anything and everything, learning new things, and just being a good, neighborly kind of person,” she said.
