The New Pelicans band will present its debut “Americana Music Showcase” concert featuring special guest Turtle Goodwater at Wrangletown Cider/North Story Wines tonight from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
Goodwater is the lead singer and guitarist with the local outlaw country band, Barn Fire. The New Pelicans are comprised of four members of the former Handshakers Band: Michael Walker, guitar/vocals; Mike Bynum, guitar/vocals; Gary Davidson, bass/vocals; and Paul DeMark, drums — with mandolinist Darren Weiss.
For tonight’s concert, The New Pelicans will play an opening set of originals and a few covers. The group will then back up Goodwater on a set of his original songs and covers.
Goodwater was born in a small Indiana town where he said, “Trouble was about the only thing to get into, so I took to music at a young age. Starting first with the bass guitar soon I moved onto mandolin, six-string guitar and banjo. Being raised in an area steeped in bluegrass music, flat picking and country rhythm came naturally.
“These days I find myself going back to my roots and focusing almost entirely on traditional Americana music.”
He likes to play with an authentic and raw sound that pays homage to early country and honky tonk greats such as Mel Tillis and Del Reeves as well as outlaw country artists such as Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard.
“The New Pelicans all love Americana music and playing it together,” said DeMark. “We will present different local performers with each show to play with us. There is a wealth of talented women and men Americana performers in Humboldt.”
The New Pelicans will present a seasonal concert series with different special guest artists each season. The winter concert will feature special guest Kate Thurston, whose music can be found on Spotify.
Wrangletown Cider/North Story Wines is located at 955 I St. in Arcata. Tickets for the show can be purchased at wrangletowncidercompany.com or at the door.
