City leaders in Newport are moving forward with plans to test out a new entertainment district.The idea of the entertainment district has been discussed for the past three years but has started to come to fruition over the last couple of months.The project would be along Monmouth Street and would look similar to the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area at The Banks and in Hyde Park.Visitors can walk around with drinks in their hands as they browse other businesses in the area of Monmouth Street.Newport city manager David Frommy has proposed starting out with a pilot program for the entertainment district, covering about three blocks of Monmouth Street, to see how the project works out.Frommy said he is not afraid of failure, and neither is Newport mayor Tom Guidugli, who said the pros outweigh the cons.”It will provide and afford the opportunity to use this as a test,” Guidugli said. “And it is also important for the development of walkability within a community.”The resolution to apply for an entertainment district passed with only one city commissioner voting against the proposal.The city of Newport will need to go through some procedural steps, but the entertainment district could be seen as soon as spring 2024.
