‘Next-gen’ nutrition: AG1 launches reformulated daily greens powder

AG1 Next Gen is a nutritional powder containing an upgraded methylated B complex, added vitamins and minerals and five clinically-studied probiotic strains: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum.

The launch is backed by four randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials which demonstrate the product’s ability to increase key nutrient levels and improve gut health.

“Investing in clinical trials is important because customers deserve more clarity around the quality, efficacy and claims of the supplements they choose,” Cole told NutraIngredients. “We’re proud to be setting the bar for quality and scientific rigor even higher, as it’s the right next chapter for the supplement industry.”

Clinically studied ingredients

Formerly known as Athletic Greens, AG1 was founded in 2010. Since then, the company’s flagship product AG1 has been reformulated multiple times in order to align with the latest scientific evidence and research.

Now, the daily greens powder contains more than 75 ingredients including vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, superfoods, mushrooms, adaptogens and pre- and probiotics.

Designed to offer a more comprehensive approach to health, AG1 Next Gen is supported by soon-to-be-published data from new clinical trials demonstrating its ability to increase levels of gut-friendly bacteria and close common nutrient gaps. AG1 previewed findings indicating that the formula elevates key nutrient levels (including folate and vitamin C) within three months and increases healthy gut bacteria tenfold.

Published research using the previous formula has demonstrated similar results, with one double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial showing that supplementation with AG1’s daily powder more than doubled levels of bacteria such as B. bifidum and L. acidophilus in healthy adults compared to placebo.

In addition, an in vitro trial showed that the supplement had measurable effects on the gut microbiome compared to a multivitamin tablet and was able to deliver more absorbable nutrients, suggesting improved bioavailability.

The new research aims to bolster the scientific rigor behind AG1’s new powdered product, which has maintained its NSF Certified for Sport certification.

Where next?

Looking ahead, Cole said AG1 is committed to conducting more peer-reviewed, independent research on the complete formula of all future products.

With plans to invest more than $20 million (€17.6 million) over the next three years, the company also hopes to partner with leading universities focused on advancing nutrition science and expand its in-house team of researchers, clinicians and scientists.

“We’re in an exciting period of innovation at the brand,” Cole said. “We will continue to invest in research and lead and elevate the supplement category. We’re also expanding channels to meet more customers and will innovate products to serve a variety of need states—delivering on our mission of empowering health.”
