CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Men’s Tennis improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-2 victory over UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon at LifeTime Fitness.
The Niners’ win was hard-fought and well-earned as half of the six singles matches went to three sets. Coy Simon won 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 6 to claim the fourth point and clinch the match for Charlotte before Ivan Dreycopp added insurance with his 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory on court two.
After dropping the first match in doubles play, the Niners recovered with wins on court two and three to claim the 1-0 lead entering singles play. Spencer Gray and Alex Richards tied the doubles at 1-1 before Matias Iturbe and Dreycopp clinched the point with a 6-4 win on court two.
The 3-1 advantage was set up by a pair of quick victories at courts three and five. Frederic Schlossmann wasted no time in his 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Spencer Gray won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.
The final match of the day went the Bulldogs’ way as Matias Iturbe and Freddy Murray dueled for three sets before Murray claimed the point with a 7-5 win in the last set.
UNC Asheville previously earned a point when Vasco Prata retired (back) in the second set at court two.
UP NEXT
After opening the spring season with three straight home matches, Charlotte will take a trip to Blacksburg, Va. to play Virginia Tech and Radford in a pair of contests next Sunday, January 28.
