Normani recently spoke openly about her parents’ diagnosis and how it affected her music career, particularly her solo album Dopamine.
She recounted on the moment she learned about her parents, Andrea Hamilton and Derrick Hamilton,’s cancer diagnosis.
Normani claimed that her first thought was, “F*** all of this.”
On Thursday, February 22, the Love Lies singer told Who What Wear: “This is more than music. It’s bigger than what I’m attempting to achieve. This is life or death. All I wanted was to be there for them.”
The singer went on to say that she ‘lost’ herself in the process, and that nothing made sense to her.
She stated that, despite her family’s difficult circumstances, her singing “brought joy” to her parents.
Normani explained to the newspaper, “Honestly, music got them through their cancer treatments.”
“I remember being on FaceTime with my mom while she was undergoing chemo and her asking me, ‘How’s the studio today? How’s the music coming?’ As hard as it was for me to not be with them as much as I wanted to, ultimately, pushing through made the circumstances of the last few years feel a bit lighter for my parents,” the celebrity stated.
However, she went on to comment on her parents’ illness, stating that it made her realize she has a “opportunity to make an impact in this lifetime.”
The American singer and dancer is preparing to release her long-awaited first album after a six-year break.
