Fans of the “High School Musical” movies, along with anyone who is curious or simply loves musical theater, will enjoy the latest production by Northbrook Theatre Youth Company.

“High School Musical Jr.” is a “modern classic,” said Melody DeRogatis, performing arts supervisor for the Northbrook Park District.

The show tells the story of an unlikely couple of high school students — the captain of the basketball team and an academically focused “freaky math girl” — who audition for the school musical and pave the way for others to shine, too.

“Millennials and Gen Z grew up watching these movies on the Disney Channel, and now their children continue the legacy watching the movies and TV show on Disney+,” DeRogatis said. “Audiences can expect to hear all their favorite songs from the original movie, but retold through the lens of Gen Alpha.”

DeRogatis said she picked the show, played by three sets of casts ages 8 to 14, because it appeals to both young people and adults. The young actors “uphold the integrity and fun energy of the original story, but really make the roles their own,” she said.

Northbrook Theater is located inside the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave., in Northbrook.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Oct. 22, 23 and 24; and 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. Tickets are $15.
