Nutrition Center ‘walk-a-thon’ on tap for Friday

Get going.

Walk a little while helping the California Nutrition Center take a step toward financial stability.

California Nutrition Center’s annual walk-a-thon is returning 9:30-10 a.m. Friday to kick-start its donation season. Donations are accepted as the California Nutrition Center exercise group leads laps around the center’s inside perimeter during the event. Refreshments will be provided.

Donors will be recognized with a paper foot labeled with their name on the center’s donor wall.

California Nutrition Center President Robert Zimmerman said there’s no goal for the donation season, and anyone can contribute what they can until Dec. 31. The funds are used for the center’s operations, which are supplemented by Aging Best with federal and state funding.

“We’re not struggling right now,” Zimmerman said. “We’re not financially well off, but we’re getting by, but we need to keep … going.”

An anonymous individual matched donations during the center’s previous fundraising campaign last fall. Zimmerman said the donor has other obligations, and therefore will not be matching donations at the nutrition center this year.

Outside of the Walk-a-thon, donations can be dropped off at the nutrition center 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays or mailed to the center at 107 W. Versailles Ave.
