CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Get ready for a big debate over how much red meat you eat. Scientists have drafted new guidelines for the U.S. government on how much red meat is recommended for Americans.
New guidance from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends that Americans limit their consumption of red meat as part of a growing effort to encourage people to eat more plant foods and plant-based proteins.
Scientists have long warned that the cholesterol and fat in red meat can raise the risk of cardiovascular disease. Current guidelines recommend avoiding too much saturated fat but don’t go as far as recommending people limit their red meat.
For now, this is just a draft. The final guidelines are expected to be released by the end of next year.
