Koraput: Researchers from Central University of Odisha (CUO) at Sunabeda have identified three indigenous nutrition-rich little millet varieties cultivated by tribal farmers of Koraput in the Eastern Ghats.
The team of researchers, led by Debabrata Panda, assistant professor in the department of biodiversity and conservation of natural resources of CUO, said the study findings will address nutritional security of tribals and have great potential for preparing high-value food items.
Apart from Panda, the research team consisting Pramila Muni, Aloukika Panda and scientists from MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Jeypore — Kartik Lenka and Prasanta Kumar Parida — focused on the nutritional profiling of 14 indigenous little millet genotypes cultivated by tribal farmers.
“We identified three indigenous little millets — Mami, Kalia and Bada — which showed superior nutritional composition compared to the improved variety, OLM 208, developed by OUAT, Berhampur, and other local varieties,” said Panda.
