Nutrition staff for Guilford County Schools are ending their strike
1955 FOR THE SECOND DAY. NOW, CAFETERIA WORKERS FOR GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS WALKED OFF THE JOB. AND TODAY’S DEMONSTRATION COMES AFTER THE DISTRICT PROPOSED A PLAN TO ADDRESS THOSE PAY CONCERNS. JOSHUA DAVIS HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE STORY SINCE IT FIRST STARTED AND WAS BACK OUT WITH THOSE WORKERS ONCE AGAIN TODAY. JOSHUA, WHAT’S NEW ON DAY NUMBER TWO AND DEVONTE, CAFETERIA WORKERS WERE HERE FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS, STANDING OUT IN THE COLD, HOLDING SIGNS AND REALLY DOING WHATEVER THEY COULD TO GET THEIR MESSAGE ACROSS TO DISTRICT LEADERS. AND AFTER ALL THAT WORK TODAY, THEY TELL ME THAT THEY’RE FEELING UNSATISFIED AND DISAPPOINT. AND BUT IT’S JUST VERY DISHEARTENING. SCHOOL NUTRITION STAFF FROM CASHIERS AND COOKS TO MANAGERS ONCE AGAIN GATHERED IN FRONT OF GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS, ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES TUESDAY MORNING, ONLY A DAY AFTER GCS SUPERINTENDENT DR. OAKLEY UNVEILED A COMPENSATION PLAN THAT WOULD HAVE INCLUDED A 4% RAISE FOR CAFETERIA ASSISTANTS AND A 7% RAISE FOR CAFETERIA MANAGERS. THE RAISE WOULD MEAN ASSISTANTS WOULD EARN AN HOURLY WAGE OF $15.86, AND MANAGERS. $18.60 BY THE END OF 2023. WE ONLY WANTED. 1650 AN HOUR AND WE’RE MAKING 1586 RIGHT NOW. AND SOMEBODY SINGLE THAT COMES TO THE SCHOOL TO WORK IN THE KITCHEN, THEY THAT IS NOT A LIVABLE WAGE FOR A SINGLE PERSON WITH CHILDREN OR WITHOUT SO MANY OF THE FOLKS WHO WERE OUT HERE SAY THAT’S NOT ENOUGH. BUT AFTER HOLDING A MEETING TUESDAY AFTERNOON, THEY COLLECTIVELY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT IT WILL BE ENOUGH TO GET THEM BACK TO WORK. BUT THEY’LL CONTINUE ADVOCATING FOR BETTER PAY. THEN THERE’S TWO DAYS THAT WE HAVEN’T BEEN AT WORK THAT EVERYONE GETS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AT THE IMPORTANCE OF WHO WE ARE AS CAFETERIA WORKERS, THAT WE’RE DOING MORE THAN JUST SERVING FOOD OR JUST, AGAIN, CASHIERING, THAT WE’RE ACTUALLY BE THERE FOR THE KIDS. THEY SAY THEY ARE LOOKING INTO THE PAY SCALE. SO HOPEFULLY THAT’S A LITTLE, UM, POSITIVE THAT WE HAVE TO TAKE OUT OF IT FOR OUR LEADERS THAT WENT IN TO MEET WITH DR. OAKLEY, I THINK THAT THEY FELT THAT THERE WAS A CHANCE THAT THINGS COULD GET BETTER IN THE COMING YEAR. CAFETERIA WORKERS HOPE THAT DISTRICT LEADERS WILL KEEP THEM AT THE FOREFRONT OF DISCUSSIONS ABOUT BUDGETS AND PAY MOVING FORWARD
