If you want a Crunchwrap Supreme in Oakland, you’ll have to get in the car. Four of Oakland’s five Taco Bell locations have closed their dining rooms and gone drive-thru only, according to multiple news outlets. The fifth appears to have closed entirely.

On Sunday, KRON-TV reported that Taco Bell locations at 3535 35th Ave. and 630 Hegenberger Road in Oakland had closed their dining rooms; on Monday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that two other Oakland locations, at 6900 Bancroft Ave. and 2255 Telegraph Ave., had also closed their dining rooms (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms). A fifth location at 6035 Telegraph Ave., which is a rare combined KFC and Taco Bell restaurant, is listed as closed on Taco Bell’s website. SFGATE heard a busy signal upon calling the restaurant multiple times.

The Taco Bell at 6900 Bancroft Ave. may have closed its dining room, but a McDonald’s and Burger King located within half a mile of the Taco Bell both still have their dining rooms open. A Church’s Texas Chicken located about a quarter of a mile away at 7301 Bancroft Ave., however, has also closed its dining room, SFGATE confirmed. Church’s Texas Chicken did not respond to SFGATE’s inquiry as to why the dining room was closed in time for publication.

“Providing a safe environment for team members and customers is the priority at Taco Bell restaurants,” read a statement from Taco Bell provided to SFGATE. “The franchise owner and operator has informed us that they are consistently evaluating and working to ensure a safe environment by implementing procedures, such as closing dining rooms, and hiring security guards, and they have taken extra measures to meet with local law enforcement.”

Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb told KRON that he suspected the locations at 3535 35th Ave. and 630 Hegenberger Road were common targets for crime due to their location near a freeway, giving criminals a fast getaway.

The Taco Bell at 630 Hegenberger Road is located near the Oakland In-N-Out that recently announced its upcoming permanent closure due to “ongoing issues with crime.” The nearby Denny’s at 601 Hegenberger Road also recently announced it was closing over safety concerns due to crime in the area. Gas stations along Hegenberger Road and 98th Avenue have seen a steady uptick of thieves targeting rental cars over the past two years, SFGATE reported. Oakland police told SFGATE at the time that 271 auto burglaries, 15 robberies and five instances of vehicle theft occurred at a Shell gas station at 285 Hegenberger Road in 2023.

Oakland’s other Taco Bell locations are spread across different parts of the city, but each area saw an increase in violent crime in 2023 versus the five year average, according to Oakland Police Department data.
