Discover beauty and inspiration at Plateau Creative Arts Center.

Visit the center at 451 Lakeview Dr., Fairfield Glade, and become immersed in the captivating artwork by artists in the community such as René Oberer.

Oberer has been selected as the center’s featured artist for December and January. She is a multitalented artist known for her work in acrylic, fiber, glass and watercolor.

Her most recent endeavor is repurposing unique pieces of wood and bringing them back to life.

Oberer grew up in Vandalia, OH, and holds a bachelor’s degree in commercial art from Sinclair Community College. For 20 years, she worked as a floral designer at her family’s floral business. She also owned and operated a dance studio, teaching dance in Vandalia for more than 35 years.

In 2004, Oberer and her husband discovered the inviting community of Fairfield Glade and purchased a house. In 2013, they moved to the Big Lick area of Cumberland County.

It was while attending a Fun and Wine Friday event held at the Plateau Creative Arts Center, that Oberer was inspired to start painting again.

While she loves working with acrylics, she’s also rekindling her passion for watercolors and has experience with textiles and art glass.

“I’ve painted and worked with textiles my entire life,” she said. “Recently I’ve started working with wood and resin ranging from small sculptures to tables.”

Oberer joined the Art Guild in 2022 and enjoys working with all the artists and volunteers.

“For my wood sculptures I let the piece lead me into the project,” she explained. “My tables start with locally sourced trees that we take down and mill into slabs.”

Oberer was led to working with wood about a year ago, when the Art Guild had a Found Objects theme. She wants her works to focus on peace and serenity. Other times, she wants her art to be thought provoking.

She offers a bit of advice for new artists: “Always challenge yourself with something new.”

Oberere’s artwork will be on display along with the members’ gallery artwork exhibit from Dec. 6-Feb. 6, 2025.

The Arts Center is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday from 9:00-4:00 through Dec. 23. At that point, it will operate on winter hours of 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Saturday until March 31, 2025.

All artwork in the gallery and in the Endless Possibilities Shop is available for purchase.

Celebrate and view Oberer’s artwork during the Dec. 5 Fun and Wine Friday reception. The public is welcome to attend this free event and have a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic beverage. It’s a great time to meet many of the Art Guild artists and hear more about the Arts Center.

This Fun and Wine Friday holds special significance because the Art Guild will reveal the winners of the People’s Choice awards.

There will be no January Fun and Wine Friday, but the Art Challenge Exhibit for December and January is The Art of Ice.

Art Challenge Exhibits are a way to bring together a range of artists, offering established artists a platform to showcase their work and giving emerging artists a chance to enter the art world. Artists are invited use any genre or medium to depict ice in one or several of its many forms.

This exhibition is open to all Art Guild members, with no additional entry fees. The choice of medium and interpretation is entirely up to the artist.

The Plateau Creative Arts Center/Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and an equal opportunity provider. Visit the center on Facebook and Instagram, or go to plateauarts.org for more about other art classes, exhibits, membership, opportunities and events.
