NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion men’s and women’s tennis teams will be at home this weekend with Sunday being a doubleheader honoring a former head coach with Darryl Cummings Day.
A special presentation will occur prior to the start of both matches honoring the memory of Cummings. The men’s team will start the day at 10 a.m. facing Brown, followed by the women’s team taking on Penn State at approximately 1 p.m. inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Cummings, who passed away in December, was the head coach at Old Dominion from 1992-2011. In the final 17 years of his tenure he also coached the men’s program, while coaching the women’s program his first three years. Cummings coached in this area, with stops at Norfolk State and Virginia Wesleyan, for nearly 25 years winning over 600 matches.
He had a successful run at ODU, where he was a six-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year. Cummings coached 14 CAA Players of the Year, four Rookies of the Year, six All-Americans and more than 40 Academic All-Americans. His former Monarch players went on to compete in events such as the Davis Cup, Federation Cup and the Olympics.
